The Global Stocktaking on Sustainable Energy will convene in April 2024. The event will contribute to ongoing efforts to achieve peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

As part of the preparations, the secretariat in the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is calling for inputs from all stakeholders via an online survey, with a deadline of 3 April 2024. By providing a virtual platform for stakeholders worldwide to contribute their expertise and perspectives, this online consultation ensures that the outcomes of the stocktaking accurately reflect the diverse views and insights of stakeholders.

Mandated by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) and scheduled as part of the Sustainability Week organized by the President of the General Assembly from 15-19 April, the global stocktaking aims to review the progress achieved at the conclusion of the UN Decade of Sustainable Energy for All (2014-2024) and to raise ambition while accelerating actions toward SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy). This includes catalyzing innovative solutions, investments and multi-stakeholder partnerships. The global stocktaking will bring together high-level representatives from Member States and other leaders from all world regions.

The global stocktaking builds on the momentum generated by the High-level Dialogue on Energy (HLDE) in 2021, aiming to advance progress towards a just and inclusive energy transition. One avenue for action will be expanding the over 200 voluntary commitments contained in Energy Compacts, totalling over USD 1.3 billion in investments and commitments through 2030, that have been made in connection with the HLDE and in its follow-up, supported by UN-Energy. Also, among the key questions to be addressed is determining appropriate institutional arrangements beyond the UN Decade for continuing international cooperation on energy.
